Artist's Comments

The American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis. this one was resting in the shade on the bank of bit of slackwater where there were a great many young fish it could hunt. It was, perhaps, 18 inches (45cm) in length and appears to be male (or such is my surmise; if anyone knows more about these creatures and I have made an error in identification, please do tell me). The males can reach a length of 14 feet (4.25 meters) and a weight of 1000 pounds (450 kilograms).

You're venturing into woods and swamps now?

What indicates it's a male?
