Artist's Comments

Crotalus horridus, the Timber Rattlesnake. This one would be about 4 feet long. Neurotoxic in this part of Arkansas, as opposed to hemorrhagic and proteolytic in other parts of its range, and potentially deadly - very long fangs so the venom is injected deep. If you are bitten, get to a hospital as quickly as you can and plan on staying awhile...
It wasn't particularly concerned that I was there - this species is relatively mild-mannered - and would have made it abundantly clear that I was unwelcome before striking, unlike other poisonous snakes in the area.
